Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a highly effective treatment for all types of anxiety and depression. Research studies repeatedly find CBT to be one of the best treatments for:

· Depression, low self esteem and perfectionism

· Worry, stress and panic attacks

· OCD, health anxiety and social anxiety

· PTSD and trauma

In CBT we work on the idea that our feelings and physical symptoms are affected by our thoughts and our behaviours or actions. We believe that how we view ourselves, others and the world can have an impact on our feelings. In turn this can then affect what we do, we may do less or do more to compensate to feel better. In CBT we view this as a vicious cycle linking our thoughts–feelings-behaviours. People can often feel “stuck” in this cycle and this in itself can make you feel worse.

In treatment we discuss how this vicious cycle may look for you. As everyone is different with different experiences, this cycle will be mapped out individual to you. We will discuss how your thoughts may be impacting on your mood and how your patterns of behaviours can reinforce this. In CBT we use a wide range of different treatment techniques. We aim to help you to change your thinking, how you feel and how you respond to allow you to break free of this cycle.

CBT is a very hands on type of therapy. We place a great emphasis on you learning these techniques so that you can take them with you into your future.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)

EMDR is also a highly effective treatment for depression and anxiety. In EMDR we work on the idea that how we feel, think and behave is linked to past traumatic life events. When we go through a traumatic life event the memory for this event can get “stuck” and not get stored away correctly in the brain. It is a bit like the memory is “too big or emotional” and the brain struggles to process it correctly. When a memory is not processed correctly it can be re triggered in our day to day life. This means we can repeatedly get the thoughts and feelings associated with this traumatic memory coming back to us. This can lead us to feeling down, anxious or have feelings such as guilt and shame.

In treatment we begin with identifying the re occurring thoughts, emotions, physical symptoms and patterns of behaviours that are causing you distress. We then work together to identify the life events and memories we feel are linked to these.  In EMDR we help you to work through these memories in a safe environment so that they can be processed and properly stored away. This means they can no longer be triggered day to day and affect you in the here and now.

Successful EMDR treatment helps people to “move on” from painful memories and associated feelings and thoughts. People often report feeling more in control of their lives and less stuck in the past.
